I struggled with trying to drive traffic for 18 months before I was able to monetize my first blog. I was determined to make money from Ad-Sense, since I didn’t realize at the time that there was any other way…
I’m assuming that you’ve already read up on how to make money with a
blog the traditional way. You know, by trying to drive massive amounts of traffic to your site so that some small percentage would click on your ads? Have you tried it? It’s frustrating.
I tried everything with my first blog to drive enough traffic to make a reasonable living from Ad-Sense. (If you don’t know what Ad-Sense is, see my post here.)
The traditional methods of driving traffic, of course, are
1. Using Ad-Words and Pay-Per-Click advertising
This is horribly expensive though, and for the amount of traffic that you get, is not worth the money in my opinion.
2. Article Marketing
This involves writing massive numbers of low-quality articles based around some keyword that relates to your blog, submitting them to a site like E-Zine, and then linking back to your blog. It can be effective for driving traffic, but it is very time consuming. You may have to write and submit 400-600 word articles up to 500 times before you see results.
3. Social Media Like Facebook and Twitter
Again, these can be an effective way of building traffic. BUT – if you are just looking to make money from your blog quickly, it’s kind of draining to be constantly engaging with readers only to hope that they click on an ad which will just send them away from your blog. It’s self defeating.
I used all of these methods, and ended up peaking with a day where I made $19.26 from Ad-Sense.
Sure, if you’re not currently making any money from your blog, then $19.26 a day might seem great. But with the amount of hours that I put in trying to drive enough traffic to make that amount, it came out to about 30 cents per hour of my time. I could do better than that working in a gas station.
With a lot more work, I finally came upon the idea of developing an e-book that I sold off the back end of my blog for awhile, and made about $2000 off the launch. But again, it took blood, sweat, and tears, and I wasn’t entirely happy with the number of hours that I had to invest in order to make that amount.
Recently, I’ve been trying out Rob Benwell’s “Blogging to the Bank” program, and I’m pretty impressed so far. With about 3 hours worth of work, I’ve already increased my blog income to the point that I’m considering quitting my job. It involves some somewhat controversial “espionage” techniques, but it’s completely legal.
I hope that you don’t bang your head against the wall for as long as I did, trying to make money with a blog. I’ve found that it’s worth spending a little bit of money on an appropriate product if it helps you to get where you want to be more quickly.
